Training Facilities

To implement the courses, the In-House Program provides a 70 square meter training room adjacent to the main office of Blue Manila, Inc., as the main venue. It is equipped with study desks and chairs that can accommodate eighteen (18) participants per class, a whiteboard, an overhead projector, a television set, a VHS player, reference materials such as books and VHS tapes, and a computer unit that is loaded with various programs / exercises for the participant's use.

There is a cooking facility for the culinary course and the office's telex and facsimile machines are made available for the purpose of actual hands-on training of the junior officers.

Teaching Staff

To ensure that participants are provided with quality training using global standards, the in-house training engages the services of qualified lecturers from the industry and the academe with extensive experience.

It has, for example, engaged the services of Prof. Angelo Tagle and Menelieto Olanda, former Deans of the College of Marine Transportation and College of Marine Engineering respectively of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy.

Dr. Reynaldo Vea was the former Dean of the College of Engineering of the University of the Philippines and Acting Executive Director of the National Engineering Center.

A trained Chef of the Grand Hotels and Resort Group handles the culinary course.

Methodology

Lecture type of discussions are conducted during the training. There is an open forum after each topic is discussed. Towards the end of the course, the participants are grouped and given cases to study, analyze and solve together. It is through the workshop that each group is made to present and defend their case.

For the culinary course, the first two days are devoted to lectures on menu planning, cost control / budget and sanitation. The next three days are actual hands-on preparation, cooking, baking and presentation of their prepared European menu , mainly German and Dutch dishes.

Evaluation

To monitor the development of the In-House Training Program, each participant is given an evaluation sheet to rate the lecturer's performance and to write any suggestion, comment, feedback about the course and the program. To gauge the participant's performance, the lecturer in turn, gives exercises and short examinations.

Funding

The In-House Training Program is partially supported by contributions from our foreign principals. The Training Fund is used to cover the following expenses :

Monthly rental fee
Utilities such as power, water and telephone
Professional fees of lecturers
Training materials and handouts
Acquisition of present and future equipment / hardware and/or furnitures
It is the company's policy to encourage its own pool of crewmembers to avail of the In-House Training Program which is provided to them free of charge.
